um, for your gas and brake to simultaneously stop working means the engine has stalled.
The gas is physically connected to the throttle body, for you to push the gas and nothing heppens means the engine is off (or the car is in neutral and you're jus revving the engine).
The brake booster also relys on the engine's vacuum tubes to provide power assist braking, if the engine stalls out or is off, you will lose power brakes and you will have to push the brake hard to get the car to stop.
It's not like the brake and gas petal have just stopped working, I mean they are directly and physically connected to the systems they operate. Are you sure the engine is still running b/c I think you're stalling out and you have to restart the car.
There is only one other explanation to the problerm you are experiencing and that is, the RPMs are so low (the engine is jus barely keeping itself from stalling) that it is not putting out enough power to operate the power brakes and this would cause the car to 'bog' when you push down the accelerator.
In either case, I would look into a tune up. New OEM plugs, wires, distributer cap, Fuel filter, air filter and check the, injectors, battery voltage, and O2 sensor.
