power steering pump cleaning?

right now my se-r has no power steering. it has a pump but the hig pressure hose snaped awile ago and the guy never replaced it. by looking at the engine bay there is no way to know if there is a crap load of crud in the pump or not. is there a way to go about cleaning it out? also, a page from the FSM wouldnt hurt

i need to buy the FSM, i will soon.

Why not just hook up a new hose and throw some fluid in it? If the fluid has bits of crap floating around in it, then the PS pump got some dirt in it while the hose was off. Or just take off the pump and take a look that way. I don't think there is an easy way to tell if the pump is on the car.
