Angry Transmission Slipping 92 GXE Manual Trans.

Hi,

I purchased a 1992 sentra GXE 5 speed with the 1.6L engine. Recently the transmission has been slipping under acceleration. I changed and flushed the transmission fluid. It was still in good condition with no particles in it. Does this sound like a clutch problem? Preasure plate?

I do not know very much about transmissions. If this is a clutch thing, what is ballpark cost at replacement with a good quality clutch. If it is a full tranny thing, what is ballpark cost for full replacement.

Your imput is greatly appreiciated as I want a little info. before heading to the transmission shop.

Thanks again,

Kris

Sounds like your clutch disc or pressure plate is worn. Generally, both are changed in a clutch job. If you have no mods on the engine, then the stock disc and PP are good. Probably run about $350-400 for the whole job. If the clutch pedal is stiff, then you should check the clutch cable before shelling out the cash. Do a search on how to adjust / check the cable, you'll find a lot of threads on that subject. Good luck!

Thanks for your advice.

Got the car into the shop this morning, and almost laughed at the clutch they pulled out It was very worn out! Having it back at the end of the day was great, but it took me a while to re-learn how to drive with a proper clutch The head mechanic at this transmission shop said to drive it for a few days and bring it back for a clutch peddle adjustment. I can see why as the peddle feels very light. and there seems to be only 1 or 2 inches of travel between fully disengaged and fully engaged. What do you guys generally like for travel in your clutch peddle - is it personal prefrence?

Also, upon recieving the car he told me that when re-hooking everything back up the speedometer didn't work. The cable is turning from the tranny, but nothing is happening in the dash. It worked fine when I brought it in, I was wondering if anyone has heard of the speedometers being sensitive? They said that they will fix it when I bring the car back in - was wondering if I could point these guys in the right dirrection.

Thanks again for your advice,

Kris

I'm sure when they were removing the transmission they unpluged the vehicle speed sensor. Maybe it wasn't reconnected... I'm not sure. It could just be coincedence, but I've had plenty of cars handed back to me with another thing wrong with them after shelling out cash to have the original problem fixed. If don't have a picture of the VSS and it's snowing pretty good here now. Sorry I can't be of much help.

a manual transmission doesnt slip. itll grind gears. if any slipping it would be a clutch. when you get a new clutch take your flywheel and get it resurfaced its really cheap at most shops like 30 bucks. that should solve your problem
