On my 94 sentra, I have a intermittent problem where you turn the key and you hear the starter go but it doesn't turn over the engine. You try it a few times and it will engage the engine and start fine.
I know in the past the starter has been replaced and did not solve the problem. From the symptoms, I seems like either the selenoid is not working to engage the starter gear or there are dead spots in the flywheel gear.
I've heard that replacing the flywheel requires removal of the engine. Is this correct? What is a reasonable price to have the flywheel replaced? (and of course the clutch wear parts while it is pulled apart?)
If it is not an engine pull, how hard is the flywheel replace?
What is the likelyhood the starter is the problem?
btw, I did search, just couldn't find anything quite like this.
When my starter was about to go out would squeal for like 2 to 4 seconds after the engine started, that squeal was only for a week, then the starter died... when it dies usually it starts with a battery jump from another car but only once or twice then the thing is shot for good.
Hmm... I'd try this: take the starter out, have it tested at any auto store...If it the test is okay... then disconnect the battery, put the car in neutral and have someone turn the engine with a wrench while you check on the flywheel. I'm guessing the only way is to reach into the window where the starter came off and feel the flywheel or a mirror and a bright light might work you need to remove all intake ducts and stuff in the way, I wouldn't remove the intake manifold unless you're really desperate to find out. Good luck!
This has been happening for a few years. There is always the possibility the starter is the problem and maybe I'll pull the starter to check the flywheel gear and have the starter bench tested.
Can anyone answer about how hard the flywheel replacement is?
You can check the starter on the car, Turn the key to the on posistion and crawl under the car and use a jumper wire and jump the power terminal to the selonoid termanal, do yourself a favor take out the brace that goes to the intake mani and the block just to give yourself more room. i had to do this to get my car home last week. My starter made the same noise just before it died good thing it happend in front of work cause i work at an auto parts store
If the starter is turning but not turning over the engine then it's the starter solenoid. Sometimes you can buy just the solenoid, I don't know if that's the case or not with our starters. You could see if there is a local starter/alternator rebuilder in your area, they might be able to put a new solenoid on it in a matter of minutes and it shouldn't cost much. If you're going to replace the starter altogether, then get the one made by Mitsubishi. As for the squeal, that's very typical, particularly with the Hitachi starters, the Mitsubishi starters don't do that so much, if at all. Mine is a Hitachi and used to squeal, so I took it out, and took it apart and loaded up the planetary gears with synthetic grease. That was over 2 years ago and it hasn't squealed since. Squealing doesn't necessarily mean it's going bad.
