A/C system on '91 SE-R... Another common problem?

Just saw someone else mention their B13 A/C was bad.

When I bought the car ('91 SE-R), the A/C worked great for one day and then stopped blowing cold air. My first assumption was that this meant there was maybe some kind of freon leak, but then I notice that when I turn the A/C on, there is no sign of the compressor cycling on and off, no change in the idle or audible clicking which is usually very easy to hear on a car with A/C.

Does this mean the compressor itself is possibly bad?

Is non-working A/C a very common problem with the sentra and if so what is usually the cause?

This is not necessarily an indication that the compressor is bad. More likely you have an open somewhere in the compressor circuit. First off, look for a blown fuse. The fix might be as simple as that. Since yo get no change in idle speed I might assume that the ECM isn't receiving an A/C on indication from the switch. As far as I have seen switches are more likely to fail then any other component.

There's a pressure switch in the system. If there isn't enough refrigerant in the system the pressure switch won't allow the system to kick on. You may have leaked past the critical point.

you are right the pressure switch will shut off the compressor when freon is low so you don't burn out the compressor
