Hard shifting

On the way home yesterday, my car got real hard to shift. I almost couldn't get it into any gear. It's like the clutch can't get fully engaged. I looked at the adjuster on the cable and it appears to be adjusted all the way to the back of the car. Am I looking at replacing the clutch or what??

thanks for any help,
Stan

No. Would that help? Do you think the cable has stretched or what?
Once the car is in gear, it doesn't seem to slip or anything.

if the cable is stretched its not fully disengaging the clutch so that can cause rough shifting...

Is this a known problem on these cars? It would certainly be easier than replacing the clutch.
Also, the car has 185.000 miles on it.

thanks, James.

you have that many miles, can you remember the last time you changed it? you already know it has no more threads on the cable. if you have never changed it, like you said, do that before you do the clutch.

Just an update. I got about a turn more adjustment out of my old cable (after buying a new one, of course) and this seemed to fix the problem. Actually I might have been good with only a half turn from the adjustment wheel as it's now engaging further out than it used to. Thought this might save someone some hassles down the road (especially considering how much of a pain it would be to get to the two bolts on the firewall that is behind the stupid cruise control -I hate cruise control...).
