Why Does The Car Stall When Breaking Hard in Neutral???

My girlfriend has a 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R 2.0 and she's having a problem with it stalling on her.

She says that it only does it when she brakes semi-hard in neutral.

She said it happens almost every time, BUT she can remedy it by slightly pressing her clutch in about 2 inches?

My first guess when she said it was stalling when breaking was either a Fuel Filter or a bad Fuel Pump.

But if she can save it from stalling by pressing the clutch even when its in neutral, that confuses me.

She said the RPMs drop VERY low, but rise again when she presses the clutch.

Anyone have any idea what this can be?

Sounds like the base idle is off.
Check that and let us know.

it sounds like the clutch is sticking, and then when depressing the pedal it frees up the motor

But if the idle was off why wouldnt it be noticeable any other time, and why when she's in neutral??

But I thought the clutch is really doing nothing when your in neutral anyway. So how would that affect the idle when the engine is spinning freely in neutral?

The idle gets a boost when the car is in gear and going 10 mph or more. In neutral, at speed, it loses that boost which may be dropping it too low for the IACV to compensate quickly. Especially with the added load from braking. The clutch has a sensor on it too that the ecu uses as input which may be giving back the boost in idle the neutral took away.
The IACV/ACC could also be sticking, wouldn't hurt to clean them out.
These are just guesses but checking the idle is easy and should be done anyway as a tuneup issue.

What are IACV/ACC how do you clean them out?

It is hard to explain without pictures.
I would advise getting an inexpensive Haynes manual from Autozone. It will have pictures that will show you what each component looks like and where it is.

A quick way to check if base idle is your problem is to open up the base idle screw more and see if it still stalls. It still won't be set accurately but at least you will know you're on the right trail.

On the B14, this screw is on top of the manifold, at the oposite end from the throttle body. It is just a big plastic screw with a phillips head cross in it and knurled edges for easy twisting by hand.
On the B13, I assume it is still at the same end but it may be under or around the manifold. If you have a friend who knows where it is, ask.

Remember, this is just a guess.

Cleaning the IACV assembly is more difficult, get the manual before you try that.
