My A/C hasn't worked on my car in years, since before I owned it. I don't care enough about it to put much time or money into it so I never really looked into it because I'm not gonna convert to R-134a just for a recharge. Too involved and costly. But then I started thinking about it, and absolutely nothing happens when I hit the switch. The switch lights up but I don't feel a power loss from the compressor. So I'm wondering, if my charge is gone would I still feel a power loss? My thought is that if I just have an electrical problem, like a bad switch or a wire fell off, then I could get A/C back pretty cheaply. If I'm out of charge then the hell with it. Which do you think it is?

My '92 behaves in the exact same way. I don't think its an electrical problem. I read somewhere that when there is no refridgerant in the system, the compressor will not turn on.
Yeah, I read that too. I read on MSN Autos that B13 Sentras had some kind of problem with an A/C ground wire coming loose or something like that. Not the most reliable source of info, but got me hoping I could just reconnect the wires.
Hmm... Canada's only a 20 minute drive away. Is R12 banned there too?

The compressor is equipped with high and low pressure switches, might even be one switch that does both. So it won't work if it's over or undercharged. As long as your compressor is still good, switching to 134a isn't expensive, in fact, you can do it yourself at home relatively easily. It used to be that to convert you had to replace the dryer and other various expensive parts, but anymore, all a shop does is put new seals in and recharge the system. The seals are like $3 and you can get a can that has enough oil and 134a to recharge your system and even has a reuseable gauge on it, for like $30. Then you need the adapters to connect to the high and low lines and those are like $10 total. You have to release the existing R12 to atmosphere but chances are, there isn't much, if any, left in there as it is. You can't tell if your compressor is good until you charge the system though.

Best way to check it is to pull the AC relay in the fuse box under the hood. Short out two of the pins (I forget which). The compressor SHOULD kick on regardless of how much their is in the system. That's how I turned mine on when I tried to recharge mine, shorted it so the system would take the R-134. There was a leak somewhere tho, it ALL just came out as I put in. Haven't had the time to check it tho for the leak;/
