Red face the 900 dollar tach

My problem has been identified. In case you haven't read my posts pleading for help before, while installing my own tach I touched 2 of the 4 wires coming out of the stator. Since then my car would not turn off with the key. I'd have to go under the hood and kill the engine and then pull the negative lead on the battery to shut off the engine and kill the electronics, respectively. I had no clue what was wrong so I finally took it to a dealership. After 2 days with a mechanic I was informed that the reason that my car would not turn off was that I shorted out my main computer (ECM). 860 dollars later my car will turn off again, but at least I have a tach.

The car has 105k now, but I don't doubt that it will be worth it. I assume I'll be able to put close to another 80k or more on it, and in a year and a half I'll have my bachelors in engineering and my biggest car problem will be deciding between a spec-v, trans-am, mustang gt, or 3-series.

...But at least I have a tach...

Glad you got it figured out, sorry it cost you that much though. I agree about the 3 series, a 300 ci would be nice. The spec V, mustang, and TA aren't even on the same palying field if you ask me, there's no contest which car is the best. I'd pick my own car over those three. Shit, my brother in law has a stock '91 B4C with over 150K on the clock, and he smokes mustangs and other TA's and Camaros all day long, running a decent 14.5 and he barely pulls on me.

AjRaCeR805, why you being a dick? Need I point out how you got owned when you fucked up your driver's side front?

well it all depends on what type of ta's and camaro's you are talking about... transams are some really quick cars and so are z28 and ss camaro's.. my friends stock transam ws6 its pretty damn quick. but i would still go bmw

Never seen a WS6 run, but that night my brother in law ran the 14.5 he was quicker than various Z28's and SS's. It's amazing how little horsepower will make a WS6 run quick. You'd think it'd take more to get that hunk of metal moving. I know a guy with a mildly modded WS6 and he was giving a brand new Z06 a run for the money.

Got owned by the dealership? Yeah they had me over a barrel but they weren't compeletely screwing me. You ever try to find the exactly matching replacement main computer for a 10 year old foreign car?

As for the next vehicle... The american muscle would be sweet as hell but I'd have every cop in buffalo on my ass in one of them. I'd probably lean towards the 3 series over a spec V so that I could get real torque without messin with a turbo. And ya can't beat a beamer 3 series/6 cylinder as far as finish and handling go.

btw... what's a B4C?

Hmm... but the fwd sentra would be better in the snow, which is a huge consideration living in western ny. Although the beemer could be almost as good, especially if I get traction control, a couple sand bags, and snow tires. OK beemer still wins. Besides, effortless doughnuts on the snow just aren't as fun if ya gotta do em in reverse... :-P

if i were you i'd be very cautious about picking on big domestic v8's. im not putting down sr20 powered vehicles because i own one, but youd be fucking with 300 plus whp compared to your maybe 150 whp for a fully bolt on modded se-r, and i dont think power to weight ratios could even the rest out for you.

then again a turbo se-r would be different and give those big v8's a run for their money... :-)

and beamers are bmw motorcycles, bimmers are bmw automobiles :-)

Yeah, I'd never try to keep up with an american 350 with a 4 banger. But I could actually see how an se-r would be more fun on the street, cuz you actually have to shift it to keep it moving. It's a fun challenge to keep a lower powered car in its power band, whereas with a TA or SS all you gotta do is let out the clutch to get it to make big power. How boring... well, if you can call getting your head slammed against the headrest boring...

I wouldn't be too afraid of 300+ whp when it's hauling 3300 pounds. Stock to stock, they aren't putting much over the SR, certainly not as much as their owners would have you believe.

The Ws6 is pretty mean, i had one playing with me on the freeway on my yamaha and he surprised me with the punch that car had, but in the end power to weight got the best of him. Hail to the Yamaha.

Ahh... but V-8's are fun to pick on...

I just got my swap done so no stories quite yet. But within the last two weeks my friend and I came to the realization that we might be able to give mushbangs a run for the money (98 and below gt's, 5.0's, whatever) So last week he races a sn95 stick, hardtop, and pulls him, barely but pulls him nonetheless. A couple days ago he races a 90' LX 5.0 w/ a stick hardtop and pulls him from the line into 4th gear only by a half car but danggg a mustang?! He's got PR cai, hotshot, mandral bent ex. and that's it hp wise, no rear seats, but on the other hand.. a rollbar so it evens out. When he told my I thought it was so funny. How many mustang guys are going to know what an SE-R is? they just know they got whooped by a 4 banger ricer! I love it
