Help me out here. Gimme all the possible things you can think of that would keep an engine from shutting off when I turn the key off. The radio and blower shut off, but the engine keeps running and everything (dash lights, defroster, prolly everything mechanical) is still drawing a current. I'll give ya a hint. It's got something to do with shorting out the orange and black wires going into the stator for a split second. Gimme everything ya got! Don't stop at a bad ignition switch. Get more creative.
Its dieseling (engine keeps running even after taking key out of ignition). Get a Hayne's manual, it'll tell you exactly what it is. I can't remember what the problem is other than your turbo timer is working a little overtime .

Actually harris if you read through some of his posts from before I don't think it'd dieseling... he touched two wires together and shorted something out, since then he's been having this problem...
I don't think you'll get any help online. Get a wiring diagram and a meter and go at it... good luck! I hate wiring...
Yea, thats why I said it could be the turbo timer. It may have gone haywire because of something shorting out . I seriously have never heard of this happen because of a short out, unless ofcourse it is the ignition switch itself to blame (its not breaking the circuit). You're right though, James. A wiring diagram will help him best.

Thanks all. I've got my Haynes manual and my multimeter and I'm starin at all the wiring diagrams in the back. I've talked to a few mechanics who have said it might be my distributor, or maybe my ignition switch. I'm wondering if I may have even toasted my computer, as the only thing that turns off all the electronics is pulling the ground lead on the battery for a few seconds. Once I reconnect it, everything's off till I start the car again. I'm gonna do a little more checking at the ignition switch. If all else fails I'm gonna have to *gasp* take it to a shop and let someone that knows more than I do about electric trouble-shooting fix it for good. Keep bouncin ideas off me if you think of anything. Thanks again.

In my 95 nissan sentra 1.6l If my headlights are turned on the car will not turn off no matter what you do you can go and sleep for 8 hours it will not turn off.
3 months later using the headlight switch to make the car stay running all of the sudden the car shuts off.
I put a new starter on the car today because the old one was broken.
It started a few times then i went to the store and back and when i returned home and shut the car off i found out that the starter was still engaged and running and smoking. I had to disconnect the battery to make it stop running.
If anyone knows anything about this please let me know
Congratulations squrl i think you've dethroned me for having the weirdest electrical problem! Good luck to ya. I'm about ready to give in and *gasp* take my car to a mechanic. I don't wanna let another man touch her under the hood but I'm almost to the point of admitting that this goes beyond my abilities. Then again, I always did like tearin things apart and the weekend's comin fast. I'm workin on takin the dash apart behind the glove box cuz that looks like where those 4 wires from the distributor (crank angle sensor specifically?) goes. As always, if anybody has any suggestions, let me know. Might I have fried my ECU? If your just tuning in, I sparked the black and orange wires coming out of the 4 wire harness to the left of the distributor, which I think is the stator, but it looks to be labeled crank angle sensor in my haynes manual. I'm open to any suggestions...

I had the same problem with my 1994 sentra. It was caused by a faulty Autozone starter. For some reason the selonoid shorted out or melted. What brand of starter are you using? I went through so many autozone alternators (somewhere between 13-18) and 5 autozone starters! I learned to purchase only Nissan OEM starters/alternators with the exception of the occasional O'reilly one's when you're short on cash. Thankfully, we have Mossy Nissan and parts departments like them that give Nissan B13 guy's discounts. Good luck!
Oh, another thing, have you had problems with your starter not working before the smoke incident? I remembered mine not starting about 4-5 times before it stayed running. Those 4-5 times, I had to tap the darn thing to start! Sucks when you're at the mall with your friends and you have to take your tire change wrench, lay on the ground, give the starter a nice love tap, and then trying to start it again. (Thanks Discount tire for my collapsable crossbar! )
---> Hint: For safety reasons & precautions, go to a batteries plus or some auto battery place and purchase a quick disconnect. These things come in handy when you have problems with starters or when electrical devices short out or malfunction. Here's a picture of one on the negative battery post:
