Unhappy Hmmm... Crappy day at the track.

So at Willow Springs today I had just a crappy day. The first run group I go out in and take my dads friend as a passanger. Well within 10 minitues of the green flag, I hear a tapping sound getting progressively louder... then... I see the temp gauge is way up, and finally a loud knocking sound At the same time I notice my passenger has been quiet and I look over just in time to see him PUKE! all over my car!!! So within 10 minutes I blew my motor and got PUKED on!!! Suck!!!

So all that said, I'm in the market for a new motor. I would love to get a DET or a VVL but I am very concerned about the smog stuff. Obviously the DET is out of the question as far as smog goes but how bout the VVL anyone in CA running a VVL? If so let me know about smog. I will be performing my first engine swap so it should be interesting Good thing I have you guys as a resourse.

did you get the water pump cavitation issue? Or lose the coolant?

I didn't loose coolant but what is the water pump cavitation issue? I didn't loose any fluids... oil or coolant. A possiblility is that in on of the sweepers the motor got starved for oil.

Not to sure about smog legality in CA, just expressing my sympathies. Sorry about your motor, but now it can make way for bigger and better things - . Just trying to put a good spin on it.

The SR20s have a little water cavitation issue, where the water pump cant supply enough coolant at higher rpms due to several reasons. In order to decrease the chances of that happening, it is recommended to get a 1.2 radiator cap (from a '96 300ZX TT), or if you have the cojones, getting a bigger aftermarket radiator (Fluidyne or Modine).

I just bought the new Sport Compact Car mag.... they were doing an overview of swap issues with the 240 and detailed the issues with the sr20 swap. The 2 big factors were Oil pan fragility and water pump issues. , if the stock oil pan get a little dinged, it really effects the ability of the oil pump the work properly due to it's low poistion. I was under the car today, the oil pan is slightly dented toward the tranny side. The fix is making sure the pan is in good condition also a greddy oil pan is suggested. Does anyone know anything about this pan? I'll look about the net after i'm done writing.
Now the water pump problem is scary to me. I'm on the track at very high rpm's for a half hour at a time. The fixes, well not fixes but helps, is a new pully for the pump to slow it down and a larger radiator as harris81 said, also keep a good eye on the temp with a good non-dummy gague.

BTW- I just started taking apart the engine compartement today for the R&R. I'm just going to go with a JDM SR20DE because of many issues with CA and smog!!! slash money This is my first time doing this so it will be interesting and probably a pain in the butt... so far so good though. Any suggestions on this swap, common difficulties? I'm going to be scouring the threads for info
