resonator on the intake

is the resonator on the intake really needed? there is one vaccume tube going to it and i was thinking about removing it and capping the intake pipe and pinching the vac. tube. if i did this would it affect my emissions/fuel economy?

also, i notice that the resonator is after the filter and on other cars its before it, does anyone actually know why this is?

It's all about intake noise I guess. There's two resontators, the big one that's behind the wheelwell just behind the bumper and the one you're talking about that's under the MAF to TB pipe. Having owned both cars, the GA had a meaner and louder intake noise than the SR in my experience. I've never been able to get a clear answer from anyone with CAI's if there is a barb on the MAF to TB pipe where that hose is supposed to go, or if it's just plugged up. Both the GA and the SR's have that little hose. The impression I get is that CAI's don't have a connection for that on the MAF to TB pipe, so they must plug it up. Being that's the case I would suspect that it doesn't affect emissions at least, otherwise people in states where smog testing is done, wouldn't pass their inspection with their CAI's in.

When I removed my second resonator - the kidney shaped thing - we just plugged up the hole for the resonator, sunk a fitting through it, and hooked teh vac line back into the intake tract there. Not sure what that thing does.

Before i replaced my stock plastic intake pipe with the weapon-r aluminum pipe, i removed the resonator that sits under the stock pipe and plugged the hole with a cap from a bottle of mobil 1 oil. All this does is make your intake sound a bit meaner, it will not affect your emissions. So go for it, or better yet replace your stock pipe like i did. I felt a nice power increase in mid-high rpms and much better throttle response. Search ebay under sentra there's a guy who sells aluminum mid-pipes for like $37...

dude, sounds like your operating on a budget Welcome to the poor house, and a car only makes it worse. I bought that $37 mid pipe from e-bay, it works great! I don't think you will notice a whole lot with just removing that resonator. The biggest power improvement you can do for cheap is a intake/header combo, they complement each other very well. I put the header on before the intake, and the improvement was noticeable but not that great. With the intake.... the thing works very well. I bought a pacesetter header to complement my poor house mid pipe
