Just a note, I did conduct a search about this topic on the BB, but I was unable to locate a more specific answer to my question...
...anyway, I just wanted to find some opinions about the K&N air filter for the Sentra (GA16DE, specifically). I'm not referring to the airbox replacement type filter, just the K&N that you drop in the airbox. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to performance mods. I'm not expecting a rediculus MPG or HP increase, but after experiencing the difference in my brother's 93 T-Bird, I'm pretty sure that these filters are legit.
Anyone have any comments or suggestions regarding these filters? Any other similar products at a similar price range that I should be made aware of? Thanks...
I know that my friend's neighbor had one he try to sell to me but it was a lil to long for my airbox. I never try them but I heard that they work well.
The drop in filter wont give you any increased power when comparing a fresh K&N vs a fresh stock paper filter. But when the filters start getting dirty, even just 10k for a paper filter, that's where the performance difference comes into play. A very dirty K&N experiences less power loss compared to paper filters. In addition, you save money over the life of the car as you only need to buy the K&N recharge kit ($10) which is good for 3 applications at least.
That's what I thought...to at least know that the K&N will actually continue working near peak performance even several thousand miles down the road makes it worth the cost...
...I'm just gonna wait until my current Fram filter gets dirty though, because I'm not really wanting to fork over the $40 to $50 for that right now.
In certain Canadian Tire stores they have a K&N display set up. It's a plexiglass box with dual fan intakes, I believe, that has an extra exhaust tube with a floating (2" diameter)ball inside. With a brand new Fram filter dropped in the box opening the ball floats above the half way mark(closer to the top) of the 16" high tube. When you swap in the K&N filter the ball drops to the bottom and stays there. It's a simple demonstration and a drop in filter at that so obvious it's providing better air flow.
Even with the K&N filter in, if you place your hand over the filter you can raise the ball and keep it at cartain levels. Once you remove your hand the ball drops again.
I dropped a K&N in my other car and I could swear it ran smoother..maybe my mind playing tricks on me. I'm not sure how noticeable it would be in my Sentra except that it would maintain a certain performance level for far longer than an ordinary paper filter, as already said above.
