92 Sentra Transmission problems
To start with, the car is a 92 4DR with a 1.6L and 4SP transmission. It doesn't have the "E" marking on it but I think that's what it is. I believe the transmission is an RL4F03A. It has 240,000 miles on it and still runs fine, that is until last week. I have not changed the transmission fluid in the 3 years I've had it and it was looking pretty bad. I managed to locate the filter kit at a local NAPA store and was on my way. When I tried to put the new filter on, I discovered that one of the bolts threaded into a nut on the top of the valve body. I removed the valve body and broke one of the very old brittle gaskets. The dealer parts department sold me 2 of the 3 gaskets I need so I still have to get the other one this week. Anyway, when I disassembled the valve body, parts rolled out of it. Specifically there were 2 springs with 2 balls about 1/4 inch in diameter and a 1/4 inch rectangular metal part. I think I know where they go but I can't tell in which direction. Does anyone know if this is shown in the manuals that I saw for download here? I have to wait til I borrow a high speed connection to find out. Also, is there anything I should know or watch for when reassembling everything? Next time I'll know to just drain the fluid and refill.
