i know alot of people have commented on the stock manual shift knob, and how to remove it, but as far as searching goes, i wasn't able to find a good descriptive approach to removing the silly thing.
so here i go.
first off, just to make life easier, remove the shift boot. now, all the rubber falls down into that little hole, for semi-easy cleanup.
next up, you'll need a safety knife, or at the very least, a very sharp knife that you can really grip. you'll also need a pair of vice grips. and take it from me, don't use a hacksaw. It just makes a big ugly mess, and you will never pick up all those little plastic shreds.
next up, you'll need to make atleast 4 vertical slices down the shift knob itself. be extremely careful cutting, as blood is a complete pain to remove from cloth. now that you've made those cuts, make a series of horizontal slices around the shift knob, so the shift knob is cut into about 8 chunks. now, using the razor, sort of slice and pry the chunks off, if they don't just fall off. if you do this right, you'll be left with this silly little plastic thing threaded on the shift knob, and the shift boot retainer further down. don't worry about the retainer yet. take your vice grips, and grab that stupid little plastic piece. give it some force, and it should break lose without too much bull. after a few dozen turns, it should come off. now you have, essentially, a threaded stick. take a moment to check that little clock on the dash. this entire process took me about 10 minutes, and thats only because i tried using a hacksaw. big mistake.
after this, i installed a cheap-"stuff" red lace shift boot and "titanium" knob from
acekogyo .the shift boot itself will not fit perfectly, unless you cut down the shift lever, but i have not done that yet, as i can't seem to find my tap and die set. that will happen. I just rough-jobbed it with a pop-riveter. call it ghetto. the acekogyo shift knob includes a set of bolts to make it fit. ignore them, the silly thing fits on perfectly. its significantly shorter than the stock piece, but you can either cut down the lever, or pull the retainer up all the way, and the two pieces will fit with a few 16ths. it now looks much better than the "shifter by Fido" i had. the entire setup cost me about 25 bucks with combined shipping.
Hope this helps everyone out!
Note: i figured this was in the right section, because it applies specifically to the Sentra, but i suppose it might be moved to the Cosmetic Mods section or so. theres a reason i'm a newbie.
