hey everyone i am new here and to nissans but my father has givin me an 88 sentra that has been sitin in his yard for about 6 months. he told me when it sat it was running but not very well. somthing about a fuel up problem he replaced the fuel pump and some other things in not sure about. so yesterday i went out and charged up the battery over night and today put some gas in it and cheacked the oil and tryed to crank her over. well she was trying to start but just wouldnt quite kick over. and i dont know where to go from here. anything i could do maybe that you can think of? or should i juss bring it to the shop at the end of my road? any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance - JoPre
it sounds like it might be the starter to me
is it a 4-spd? if so try poping the cluch to get it started. if the car starts after you pop the cluch take the starter off and have it tested or you could just take the car to that shop and have them test the starter and or the battery
if you dont know how to pop the cluch just ask your dad he probly will know
i hope this helps

When was the last time it had a tune up? If it's been a while you need to pop the distributor cap... inspect the contacts and rotor. Clean and or replace them. Then pull, inspect clean or replace your plugs. Maybe the (plug) wires too. Fresh oil is good especially on a rig thats been sitting. Do it yourself and pay less than half what a mechanic will charge. It's good basic tune up stuff that every car owner should know. Unless you are my wife... The place where cars go to die.
Hey i have had this meany times. check your spark and compression you need at least 160psi i believe to get it to fire. if spark and good compression then get your self a can of starting fluid (carb cleaner works the cheep stuff but the starting fluid works 1000 times better) remove the air cleaner ass. Have some one crank the engin. while the engin is cranking spray some of the fluid directly into the intake. if it starts spitting and popping try small spirts or heaver sprays to get it to start if it runs on the fluid and dies after you stop spraying the fluid in to the intake then you have a fuel delivery problem EG injector /pump if it is carberated and has a Pulse pump (fuel pump on the block then it may just need to be primed . Also check your timming.

its ghetto but if my car is hesitant to start, I find a quick jab on the throttle will get it to fire up. If you car has been sitting a while, dirt/ deposits may be preventing enough air/ fuel from getting it. Opening your air filter housing to let some extra air in should help too.
Only attempt this a couple of times though, the motor doesnt exactly enjoy being reved when its trying to start...
Also when turning over...push the gas to wide open throttle so you can get enuf air in there. I had to do that when I put the ga15 in my 89 and I was just firing it up.
ok thanks alot guys i just now got to check you responses im gunna go try everything i can and if it doesnt work then i guess ill be pushin it down to the shop. thanks for all your help.
