washer behind cv axle nut, important?

the replacement drivers side cv axle that I got for my 90 sentra has the hole for the cotter pin drilled in the wrong spot, when you install the washer and nut, the nut covers the hole, had to leave the washer off, will this hurt anything? Should have taken it back and gotten another axle but didn't.

I'd take it back; A washer is a must.

I'll have to inquire about swapping the axle don't know if the store will take it back since we installed it, if they won't I'll pull the nut off and put the washer and nut back on and mark and drill a new hole for the cotter pin

You might also want to check and see if the outfit you baught it from may have a shorter (flatter) nut then you can get to the hole for the pin. I would think it a safer fix than drilling a second hole in the shaft.

Did you keep any of the old nuts ? if you did, make sure the depth of the crown and the height of the old and new are the same. How far is it off ?

If nothing else, you could cut the back of one of the nuts down on a lathe or something ? would be safer than drilling the axle. besides, you probably don't want to have to tear it all apart again.
