Car is an 88 2dr 5spd. Are the main voltage regulators for these cars built right into alt's? I'm getting like 18.5v at idle!!! help.... are the regulators replacable or is this going to be the whole alternater??

yeah they are internally regulated alternators sorry to hear that is a big bill at the parts house like 125 or so bones I have had to eat one myself. and the high voltage is likely the cause of you gauge regulator friing

That happened with my first AutoZone alternator; The voltage went to 17.5. It was indeed defective, but they exchanged it, no questions asked, and it's all OK now. Spent $100 for it.

got an alt. and gauge cluster volt. reg. from the wreakers for $50. Also the car started running like a bag and blew a few bulbs when the voltage spiked. All is well again and at least it all was under $100 in parts (and beer for me )

I bet the volt. spike killed the cluster regulator. Others may want to check their alt. voltage if your gauges get intermittent. Mine would work fer like 5mins then die everytime i started it.
