If Nissan put them there they do in fact each serve a purpose!

First of all, what is the goal of you project? If you trying to custom fab an intake most people either leave spots on their intake to reconnect these, or connect breather filters to them.

If your just trying to get more air into the engine, removing the black piping and black resonator piece from the side does allow for increase VOLUME of air to enter.
Keep in mind though that this results in an increase in intake air temperature (sucking hotter behind the engine) and a decrease in intake VELOCITY (ie the enigne has to work harder to pump the air).

In the summer months your generally better off leaving your intake as is and sucking the cool high pressure air from behind the headlight!
