after many years of faithful service and cross country roadtrips my GA16i is starting to develop a few issues.
Firstly the mixture seems to be off. Pushing the gas pedal too hard seems to "flood" the engine. The car seems like it would rather accelerate at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle than at 3/4 throttle. Combined with a somewhat declining fuel mileage Im suspecting that the engine is running too rich. Since the mixture is controlled by the ECU my best guess is that some of the sensors are starting to go (most are still original!)
Im thinking its the airflow or oxygen sensors giving invalid readings, but Id appreciate any input.
Second issue seems seems to be a valve issue. If you push the car hard before its completely warmed up (ie late for work!), it sounds like a diesel engine at idle. Its doubtful that its the timing chain tensioner (if car is fully warmed up before sprited driving, the noisiness doesnt occur) which leads me to believe the timing may be off. Once again any input would appreciated.
Thanks for the help guys.
P.S. Write up on how to do sex lights/ interior neons for under $35 coming soon...
check oil lever too .... see if any habit havent changed other than that ... you might check the aiflow meter, pretty easely done for air leak (check orings)... id probe the water temp sensor too (not sure wath spec i could check for you -ohm) might wanna check for injector leak... dont forget yours run around 30psi and could make it happen more easely on the ga16i than the e16i...
let us know

I'd second on the injector leaking. I would probably first pull the trouble codes from the ECU to see if it can help you in any way. if one of the major sensors is gone, it should at least help point you in the right direction.
as for the valve noise, my car rattles a little too from somewhere on the top end when I first leave the house, but stops rather quickly. almost sounds like something near the cam ? I don't think mine has anything to do with the timing chain either.
I was wondering if those hydraulic tappets don't get tired over time and start to lose it.
The issues were actually linked, it seems both problems were caused by a valve not closing due to deposits. Got the valve to seal properly and everything seems to be running much better. The motor hums quietly and fuel economy has been much improved.
TO clean everything out, I covered half the rad, and drove the car to the mountains running at fairly high heat (followed by a proper cool down), the car feels much better now.
Thanks for the replies guys, your suggestions helped lots.
