Questions about air intake...

I was thinking about possibly modding my air intake and was thinking about a few things. One mod I have heard of is just removing the constricting intake opening by the battery. The idea I thought of would be just to remove the whole plastic pipe except for the piece coming out of the air filter cover. Would that be even better for the car? Also, Do you need a direct flow for the air, for example, would a pipe leading into the air box(big blue thing) be better than just a big hole in the air box cover? From what I understand while driving the air is forced into the carb by the motion of the car, but what about when the car isn't moving? How does the air actually get forced into the carb?

What year is your car??? If you have the big blue thing you don't have carb.

it's a 90 b12, well not a carb but a throttle body, that's the correct term right? that's what I meant either way, sorry for the confusion.
