Question 90 Sentra Automatic Troubles

I have a 1990 Sentra Automatic that won't shift. This started when it shifted from 1st to 2cnd then missed 3rd and over revved. When I started off again it wouldn't shift out of 1st. Any ideas? Help please.

yes and how did it smell ?? and wath state was it ?? could smell burned ... if so , your tranny will need a complete overall.. have you checked the cable linking it to the throttle body for sticking and free movements?? also check the linkage on the transmission it self... if everything seems right, its the internal clutchs that need attention (and is way out of my knowledge and probably almost everyone around) i'd go check for the price of an used one in the JY...

Smelt fine ... wathn't in any state, I live in Ontario, Canada ... it doesn't burn tranny fluid ... HA HA ... I've changed the fluid faithfully every 80K This tranny has 350K on it. I was hoping that it was something simple. I was actually looking for someone that knew something about tannys and had seen this problem before and could say, "Yep, seen that before. It's your ______________. This is how to fix it." Guess that's not you. Thanks for your help just the same.

For what it's worth the same thing just happened to me. My '90 XE won't shift out of First.

Tranny fluid level is fine and clean (it was completely flushed at 40k, car has 51k (yes 51k) on it now). I *know* the PO never beat on it and I never drove it at more than half throttle. I've confirmed that the cable going to the throttle body is hooked up.

Was just driving along (yes I know how suspicious that sounds, but I'm an auto tech and I *know* that the truth is important, and dammit this is the truth) at 50mph when the engine started free-revving like the tires were spinning (heavy snow today). Through some trial and error I discovered that I have Reverse all right, and 1, but in 2 and D the transmission will not upshift, and when it gets past the point where it'd upshift normally, it freewheels when you let off the throttle, no engine braking. Has engine braking when selector in 1.

So I drove 10 miles home like some butthole going 20-25mph in the right lane in 1st gear listening to the engine scream. It almost feels like the governor is stuck, but I dunno how these funky Japanese trannies work.

I know i don't come here often, but I wanted to see like you if any techs said "Oh yeah it's the direct drum snapped away from the sun gear" or "you gotta clean out the governor" or something similar. Barring that, if a trans from a B13 would swap in with little difficulty. B12's are rare as hen's teeth in the junkyards here, they mostly rotted away years ago.

FIXED

Fixed problem this morning. Took about 20 minutes.

The problem: The governor's drive gear stripped out.

The governor is a device similar to a distributor's mechanical advance mechanism that uses flyweights and springs to determine vehicle speed and modulate fluid pressure to certain areas of the trans. This is how the trans determines when to shift.

When the governor is not spinning, the trans never upshifts.

Removing the governor is easy - pop a spring clip off of the big plastic bell thing on top of the trans, remove a 10mm head bolt just below the governor (on front face of trans housing) and it slides right out. The plastic gear is held in by a roll pin. The new gear is kind of a tight fit, but soaking it in boiling water for a few minutes allows it to slide right on.

$20 part, easy to get at to replace.

Posting this for all the future searchers out there...

Again!

Adding another note here...

At 53,2k on Jan 21st, the governor driven gear stripped out. Again.

There is no apparent galling on the drive gear. No apparent radial shaft movement for either gear set. There is about .030" axial play on the driven gear (which is also the outside of one of the planetaries, and the park ring) but our trans guy says "Yeah, that's about right", and axial play shouldn't make a damned bit of difference to a worm gear anyway.

I am just hoping that it was an old gear that'd been sitting on a shelf for ten years. After I put the new gear in (should be in a couple days) I'll pull it out again after 500 or so miles and check it for wear.

If this doesn't fix, I'll look into a 4 speed swap...

You're in an Automatic..you should just stick it in Drive and go...Don't mess around or it's gonna end up costing you..I've gone through three trannies in my KIA but that's all covered for free :P
