The Next Project

Sooo, now that the coup is on the road again, I find out that the OE coup transmission has a taller 5th gear than the sedan. This also explains the beefier axles on the coup. Both axles need to be rebuilt.
Right now I'm running a 5spd/axles out of a sedan. The tranny from the coup has 275 miles on it and I have no idea what condition it's in. Do you think it's time for a rebuild? Is there some things that can be inspected without having to get too involved the disassembly? The oil was pretty ugly. Is there a good flush?
Figured I might as well pull the tranny again since I didnt replace the axle seals and they're leaking The oil burns on the exhaust pipe.

When my old toyota pickup reached like 255k, I flushed the tranny out with some brand of engine flush, changed the oil with some cheaper gear oil, ran that in there for a week or so, dumped it and put some quality oil back in and it was fine when I got rid of it at 285k and it never needed so much as a seal. I checked my receipts, trannys seals were $12 from the dealer. the only other problem I had with this B12's tranny was the "nuetral" switch on the back of the tranny was leaking through the wires. I replaced it even though I have no idea what it is for and the dealer didn't know either ?

astreamk1 has some good advice. Claen 'er up and run it. I had to replace both the neutral and backup swith due to leaking lube throught the wire holes. May want to replace the axle seals and if it's that high mileage go for the input shaft seal as well, may help keep your clutch from getting gear lube all over it.

I did notice that after I changed the gear oil in the B12, that the tranny was somewhat quieter. I believe I used the Castrol Hypoid C ? or something like that ? probably is just doing a good job sticking to everything in there ?
