Could someone please look at the photos below and tell me what exactly this is? I'm referring to the black object in the pictures. Plus, the black hose is connected to it on one end, but is not connected to anything on the other; should it be?
I have some kind of leak and it appears to be coming from this black object (although I have no idea what it is) but I'm guessing the leak (which has the consistency of transmission fluid, or possibly brake fluid) is "splashing" into this object instead.
Either way, I'd like to know what it is and I can't find it in the Chilton Nissan manual.
Thank you in advance. (If the photos aren't visible, please let me know.)
I believe that is the governer, and mine also has that hose which is not connected to anything.
You may have a seal that is leaking tranny fluid into there.

Thanks for your reply, Elbow.
Wow! In my years of owning vehicles, this is the first I've heard of this "governor."
I found no mention of it at all in the Chilton Nissan manual I have here (looked in the index and glossary), but in my Random House dictionary , it's listed as "a device for maintaining uniform speed in an engine."
Yes, fluid (trasmission? brake?) is leaking from somewhere. It looked like it was coming from the transmission; I remembered changing that a year or two ago, so I thought, how can the gasket be leaking? Do I need to tighten everything up?
Then, I peeked inside the engine and I saw the leak seems to be coming from the top, coming from somewhere else just below this "governor" (if that is what it is) and above the transmission area (where you drain the fluid, etc).
I had to look in my factory service manual at one of the exploded diagrams to get anything.
I didn't look in my haynes manual, but I don't think it's listed in there either.
Let me know if you'd like a scan of the diagram.
Todd
my guess you have an auto tranny ... that thing should be a vent of some sort to keep tranny oil pressure at a certain level... ive never one leak taught, maybe blownb can share something about that piece

Yes, I have automatic trans.
So you are saying this black object is a "vent" and not a governor? From what Elbow said, it was a governor and that wouldn't leak (I'm assuming).
But if it is some kind of "transmission vent," maybe it's leaking? (Assuming this thing leaks, of course.)
Still trying to plan a day soon where I can clean off everything (fluid is all over the place) to determine where exactly this leak is coming from.

Elbow, a scan of it would be greatly appreciated, if it isn't too much trouble.
Elbow, thanks for taking time out to post that great diagram! It's definately the piece I was asking about (the governor). I just have to analyze it to figure out what's what. (Plus, I have to look up "governor" on Google to figure out if this thing can leak or not.)
From what book did you get this excellent diagram again?
That's the Nissan factory service manual.
It's nice for this year's specific diagrams, specs, stuff like that, but the haynes manual is a definite must to cover some of the "how to" for removal/installation.
One specific example, the haynes manual tells how to remove/install the engine, the FSM only says "engine cannot be removed by itself"
*cough* bullshit! *cough* (I did it).
I got the service manual off ebay. They don't show up that often though.
