temp and fuel guages not working

Hi all:

I just bought my '89 Sentra SE (5 speed) last week and am trying to fix some problems with it right now. I need some help with two things though. My fuel and coolant temperature guages are not working. Can anyone give me some guidance in diagnosing the problem. Where should I start checking and such?

Thanks,

Jon

Thumbs up

Ryco is right. This is an easy one: You need to replace the dash voltage regulator. It is mounted on the backside of the dash cluster, and has three wires coming out of it, black, yellow, and blue. Change it, and your fuel and temp gauges are fixed.

Finally someone that knows how to fix the problem. Everybody knows what to change but nobody knows where it is or what it looks like. Where can I get one of the voltage regulators??

Hi Ricebox, I have never tried to get one from an auto store, so I don't know if they can get them. I have parted out so many B12's over the years, that I have a lifetime supply of them. They never seem to go bad when you've got a pile of them though! The dealer surely can get you one, but there are certainly cheaper ways [junkyard]. By the way, depending on what year your B12 is, the original dash voltage regulator may be smooth backed, and silver in color. Nissan upgraded the replacement ones, and they are black, with large cooling fins. Don't worry about what it looks like, just reconnect the three wires the same way you took them off, and you'll be fine.

blownb310, would you mind parting with one of those "lifetime supply" of regulators?
