i have a 89 automatic sentra and have a problem getting out of park. on the bottom of the shifter theres a shift lock(or something like that) and u have to push it down everytime inorder to get it out of park. i am not to familiar with nissans but there is a red light on the dash that comes on everytime i push the brake pedel down, could this be part of the problem? or signs of another problem?

which brake pedal?? parking brake or normal brake?

Last time i checked, the brake warning light in the dash will warn you of a burned out bulb if it only comes on when you press the pedal. Check your lights. I don't know about the shifter problem.

On my coupe if you don't have the park brake all the way down the brake light is on. but my coupe has a bad light indacator next to the defrost light. you might be low on brake fluid?

it is the brake pedel and not the parking brake. i didn't even think of checking the fluid. thanks i will check it tomarrow and will see what happens.
light is only comes on for 2 things:
1. Parking brake is on
2. Low brake fluid level ( or no fluid )
And obviously its on before you start the car too.

now its not the BRAKE light, it looks like a high beam indicator light but red and only comes on when i hit the brake pedal.
ohhh....there was another thread on this. ok, i think thats the one that tells you you have a light bulb burned out.

ok thanks, i am going to check that brake fluid now, also could the brake switch that is located on the pedel be going bad. i thought this because some cars u can hear a ticing of a relay that is allowing it to be disengagued from park. thanks

umm...i suppose the switch can get stuck but doubtful, or wires get cut. But then youwouldnt' have brake lights. And i dont think the brake has anything to do with shifting out of park.
