Problem with starting car

On my 90 b12, half of the time when I press in the clutch to start my car, it won't start as if the clutch isn't pressed in yet. How does the car know if the clutch is pressed in or not and how hard/expensive would something like that be to fix.

there is actually a switch botton between the pedal and the braket that hold it... you can unplug it if it gives u trouble.. better changing it but its a switch that contact when clutch is up... (not pressing)... when unplug it send the computer the code that the clutch is pressed on... quick trick to see if the switch is faulty... just unplug it and see if it works, if not, it could be the neutral switch, on the tranny it self...
