Tranny fluid may be low. Also could be a bearing going out on one of your accessories (p/s, alt., w/p).

Perhaps its detonation. Put some high octane fuel in and see if it goes way. Also, check your timing.

What could this be from?
do you have an E16?? cause mine has started doing like a rattle/grinding/whistle type noise when its a little cold but it really feels like its the tranny...and my 5th gear has already done its notorious thing of not staying in gear.

Is it a whistle or a whine. Trannies don't whistle, they whine. Intake obstructions tend to whistle, or really bad vacuum leaks. Cheak for cracked vacuum lines. If it's hasn't been said before, i'll say it now, B12's seem to have the shittiest rubber vacuum wines in the world. No matter how many miles is on the car, there is bound to be cracked vauum lines here and there.
Odds are it's not a pebble, but the CV joints rattling or detonation. I know the GA16i has very nice quench areas on the combustion chamber on the head, but they still will go boom at the worng time it the motors not in good tune. Just take your hand and try to move the CV joint sideways, if it does (which it shouldn't) it's your CV joints going bad (B12's love to chew them up every 3-4 years or sooner) From experience, never get CV joints from the junkyard, even if they look prestine.

well mine is more of a whine and i've determined its most likely the input bearing or gear or both. but its in the tranny. i could care less though cause i'm hoping ot get a new motor in there sometime the next year and i doubt that the tranny is going to die on me before then.

Welcome to the world of headaches.
