Question Few questions about my B12

A while back, one of my uncles friends donated us a car... a 1987 Nissan Sentra Xe, 2dr, 5 spd. hatchback. Well the clutch fried on it and it now wont go into 1st or 2nd gear(thats my first prob... I can do the clutch, but the only thing I can think of that could be up with the transaxle is the synchronizer), but anywho... My brother gave it to me and said I could do whatever.. So naturally, I plan on suping it up. But only one prob... I can't find anything for it! All I find is stuff for 91+ models. Can anyone help me out here... So I need to find stuff for it and the prob with the transaxle. Thanks!

Kitryj,
It sounds like you have a project car on your hands. I would definately throw in a new clutch and if you feel the transmission may have gone bad just get a used one. E-series transmissions are cheaper to buy then they are to fix.

If you are looking for performance modifications definately check out the Nissan motorsports catalog or go to Nismoparts.com.

Depending how mechanically inclined you are, there are also a couple engine swaps you can also perform.

Ricebox,
Looks like you and I may have to coordinate our moderating activities. I deleted the thread in the other forum not realizing you had closed this one. So I have reopened it.

Next time, we should probably avoid closing duplicate threads and just delete them. This particular forum doesnt see enough traffic to push a closed topic off the board.

Hi,
Your car as you have probably figured out now is a B12. "B12" refers to the chasis that was produced from 1987-1990 in the USA, 1987-1993 in Canada, and is still in production in Mexico.

The B12's came in a whole pile of different trim levels, XE, GXE, DLX, and some others. The different trim levels basically were interior stuff, some had a decent stereo, some had A/C etc, some had nice taillights, some didn't.

The B12's came with 2 engines. the 1987-1988's had the E16 engine. This engine cranked out 70hp.
The 1989-1990's had the GA16i. Predecessor to the GA16DE, the GA16i produced 92 Hp, and 96lb-ft of torque.

Both engines are 4 cylinder inline engines with a 1.6 liter displacement.

You may hear some people talking about SR20's.
SR20's are probably Nissans most famous engine. It came in a ton of cars starting with the 1991(?) Sentra SE-R. and ending with the 2001 Sentra SE.
It is a 2.0L inline 4 cylinder Engine that produced 144 HP in stock form. Later versions had turbos and stuff and prodcued much higher HP numbers. With just a few mods SR20's can produce over 200 HP.

Most people who want to make their B12's go really fast ditch their E16 or GA16i for SR20s.

Swapping an SR20 in place of an E16 or a GA16i is simple because they use the same motor mounts.

Basically, it all depends on what you want. If you cant afford a Turbo or Nos, your E16 or GA16i will probably never produce more than 150 Hp.
If you want to be all out performance just like "FAST AND THE FURIOUS" do an SR20 swap... if you can afford about $2,000 for a used SR20.

If you need any more info on this stuff, check out Sentra.net , they have tons and tons of info that you may find useful.

Hope I helped!!

-Nick

Sentrastud,
In all honesty, you helped alot. As did Hybrid DET. I'm going to call around for a used transaxle tomorrow, but I wouldn't know where to begin to find an SR20. The only places I've been told so far that has parts for my car is Nismoparts.com and sentra.net... I'm looking for mod parts... ex. clear turn signal lenses, body kits, etc. I'm sure this is a stupid question, but is this sentra worth my money fixing it up. I want something that I can pull up beside someone at a red light and simply make them eat asphault Particularly my best friend. We're always in competion, the only diff is he has some money and I don't, yet I always keep up with him in everything... but now we both have our 5 spd. hatchbacks and its our newest competition... who will smoke who He has a 96 Ford Escort that has a 1.9L. ztec in it that pushed I believe 88 hp stock. So with that in mind, any suggestions or comments?

Swapping for an sr20 is not simple bolt-in when it comes to the b12. It requires making two of your own mounts and drilling the holes into the frame for the other mounts. All this, while keeping the engine straight and level.

well if I'm not mistaken, the engine can be held in place with an engine hoist... but as far as the motor mounts go, how do you make your own and what all would be involved in moving the old motor mounts to where they need to be?

Kitryj: Kuminari makes a bodykit but it is fugly IMO. APC makes clear turnsignals. They are the same as in the Nissan Hardbody P/U. Your friend has a 5-speed he will probably beat you, but there are a few mods for the E16i engine. As said earlier Nismoparts.com has alomost everything you can get for that engine. Remeber you can always make your own mods. I'm trying to figure out how to connect a conefilter to my engine. When your exhaust system needs replacing get 2" piping.

Ricebox: I think i recall hearing something about someone swapping a GA16i airbox onto the E16, and then putting a DG racing intake on that.

I think it was on the ALL Experts Nissan board, but i cant remeber.

it might be worth looking into...

I e-mailed dg racing a few months ago and they have an intake that fits on the e16i. Problem solved!!!
