why does my engine idle at 1500 rpm when it's cold, after about 2-3min of driving or idling(doesn't matter which)the idle speed gradually drops to 800 which is where it should be in the first place. I have an e16i with open intake which i hope has nothing to do with the problem because i love that sound when you mash the gas!
The engine is warming up to get to the normal operating temp which usually around 2-3 minutes depends on the air temp. When it reaches the norm operating temperature range the car is actually polluting less and lubrication is better. So yeah the high idling during start-up is normal.
My car starts off cold idling at about 1900 RPM. It's normal, and as long as it slowly drops over 2-3 minutes, you're good to go. My car idles at about 700-720 RPM when warm.
