air intake idea

okay i got an idea for an air intake idea for the ga16i. it may have been discussed before but my idea is kind of like an "open air filter system" like the older muscle cars and such have. just by the air filter and then somehow connect it into the intake of the engine. im not too sure how it would fit in but probably some custom piping would work. this would provide a lot more air flow in my opinion and directing more air flow into the filter would not be a problem using the rest of the stock intake minus the housing...or a custom set up.. so it would basically look like this pic below but probably a bit smaller and would needed to be custom fit....any thoughts or am i just a dumb ass?

it would work but you could just as easy make a cai out of pvc piping or exhaust pipe

I have been debating whether or not to do that mod or not. Heres what figure so far:

The round airbox lid from an E16 should fit right on. In fact the entire airbox should (im not 100% sure) simply bolt right up. This would allow all of the stock hoses that connect to the airbox to be attached in stock (or near stock) locations. Any left overs can simply have a breather filter attached to them.
If the entire E16 airbox does bolt right up then i would cut half of the walls right off making the airbox into a semi circle with its wall at the facing the rear of the engine. the purpose of this would be to "catch the air" and prevent it from simply blowing through the filter and causing a vacuum effect over the intake that hurts flow.
If you go for this get the E16 airfilter from K&N, it would probably be your best bet.

Or if your into the CAI thing heres an idea:
Relocate the battery (to the trunk?) and look what that leaves you. Certainly a rather large CAI could be installed in the area left by the battery. Just a thought.
Personally ill probably end up going with the Old school muscle car type circle airbox.

Also do a search of the B12 forum for "Intakes". There are some good ideas there too.
