I read the thread on putting a manual into an automatic B12, and i was wondering how much easier (and cheaper) it would be to put a 5 speed into a 4-speed?
I do alot of highway miles everyday (~65 Mph) and im at atleast 3500 rpm the entire time so im thinking a 5speed would save me some gas money in the end.

Thanks!
My B12 sounds like a swarm of pissed of hornets when I get it up to around 75. I have thought about the 4 speed to 5 upgrade as well, but i don't want to deal with the 5th gear pop out issue.

Haha yeah, same here, and i have no muffler...just a pipe from the engine to the back of the car...so i know what you mean...
I havent heard of the 5th gear issue, but im sure its better than having my ears ringing all through Trig...
yeah, my exhaust off too..till i get a whole exhaust system built. i deninately doing de 5spd upgrade sometime this year. when i drive my B12 and den my dad's, i notice a difference in performance from 4th gear onward.
I have sucessfuly done the swap from automatic to manual. Origonally swapped in a 5 speed, but due to the 5th gear pop-out problem eventally the 5 speed chewed itself apart. I next swapped in a 4 speed manual, and it has been in there for over a year now with no problems.
The transmission mounts for the automatic, 5 speed manual, and 4 speed manual are all different. If you put in a 5 speed you will need the mounts from the donor car as well as part of the transmission mount that the battery tray bolts to also. The 4 speed manual transmission can use all of the same mounts as the 5 speed EXCEPT for the mount that connects from the back of the transmission, to the mount under the battery tray, because the one for the 5 speed is too long to bolt to the end of the 4 speed casing.
The CV axles from the automatic will fit the other transmissions, but are smaller in diameter. If you are going to get new CV axles any time soon I would suggest going with the ones from the manual transmission, because they are bigger and stronger.

i did a auto to maunal swap too as well. and yes, it's true about tha 4 and 5 spd mounts....thats if the 4speed box is from the 1.3l. i have both boxes, and the 1.5l box is longer than the 1.3l box. when i had to put in the 1.3l box for a short while, since i had to get some welding done to my 1.5 box, i realise the mount was longer, so we used a longer bolt and some spacers and washers to get a tight fit ( dont think it would be reconmended but hey....) so i think my 1.5l g-box mount should fit the 5spd box. naturally, the 1.3l gearing is shorter than the 1.5l's, it's a pain on the highway. i really wanna try a 5spd box, but i'll keep the 4spd as a spare.
Ok, after much waiting, I have found a VERY cheap deal on a 5-speed from an '86 sentra. Its not new, but only 96k on it. Is this going to work or do I need a closer year?
I don't know which mounts you say are different from the 4 to 5 spped, my car came with the 4 speed and I picked up a new 5 speed and my mechanic swapped it right in, didn't need to pick up any other new parts and he never said anything about anything not lining up properly.
