replaced my front rotors (new) and pads last saturday, the pass. side pads were almost to the metal backing while the drivers side had slightly less than a 1/4" of pad. No pull when braking. Noticed today that when I am coming to a stop the pass. side brakes sound like they are dragging. When I went to reinstall the caliper over the new pads the pin with the rubber cover on it was hard to push in to get the caliper to drop down to line up the bolt holes. Could the rubbing noise I hear be due to the caliper not releasing completely because the caliper can not slide freely on the pins? I've read about using a lubricant on the pins, how do you remove the pins? Should I remove the pins and check them to make sure they are smooth under the boots than lube them? I just bought a tube of Syl-Glide brake grease that I used on the ball on the short shifter I just installed so I can use that to lube the pins. Also when I pushed the caliper pistons back in using the c-clamp both sides compressed like butter so I don't think the pistons are sticking.
Ok first off do NOT use any regular bearring grease.
You can buy those little packs of caliper lube for about $1 at any auto parts store. To remove the caliper pin I think it took a 6mm allen wrench. Clean up the pin, boot, and the inside of the hole where the pin rides. Put the new caliper lube on the pin, boot, and in the hole then reinstall the caliper.
If the caliper is warped, it can also create excessive wear on the brake pads by not allowing the pads to release streight. (usually only wears one pad down)
Also use "Disc Brake Quiet" it also comes it the little packets for $1 at auto parts stores. The disc brake quiet "glues" the brake pads to the caliper and piston, so they don't squeek, and so they will release properly.

But he's right.. You need some Caliper Grease.. (Silicone Paste) on your slides... Its one of those things that most Backyard Mechanics overlook. I use it on the backs of the pads, Slide pins, and the area where the pad "Tabs" rub against the caliper. Its alos not a bad idea to take some sandpaper and make sure ALL contact surfaces are clean of rust and debris, before applying the grease...

Pulled the caliper off today after work, removed the pins, ( they just pulled out), cleaned the shafts of the pins with brake clean there was a lot of old cr-p on them, and lubed them good with the Syl-Glide (which is a silicone based grease), before cleaning the pins they would hardly move after what I did today they move in and out with no problem. I took it for a test drive and I didn't hear the dragging noise, will listen for it again tomorrow, I only heard the noise when coming to a stop, foot off the brake and if I'm not on a major road so the noise I heard yesterday is very low, It's def. not a squeal like when you don't use the disc brake quiet or the shims on the back of the pads.
