Wassup guys, I got a 87 Pulsar NX with the E16i engine a couple months ago and I have few questions...
1. WTF is with the oil cap? Taking it off by yourself is almost a workout, i tried prying at it and broke the handle of my flat head. Is this normal? The cap seems to just pull straight up but it takes a monstrous amount of force to do so.
2. Sensor light came on at 90k miles, my bro suggested unhooking the battery and touching the terminals together to reset the ECU (not sure if this works, he's a mechanic but I dunno, sounds like a kludge). I heard from the last owner that there is some button you can push that resets it in the passenger side floor panel, is it where the little philips head screw is or what?
3. My car when its cold seems to idle weird. By weird I mean it'll start-up maybe 1700 RPM, if I drive it a short distance and put the clutch in, the idle sometimes shoots up to around 2500 RPM (allowing for driving using only the clutch . Usually this goes away after a couple minutes when i stop the car at a light and let it run in neutral for bit. Not a serious problem, just curioous mostly.
Thanks guys

Your oil cap may be hard and therfor making it really hard to come off.
You can get new ones at the auto parts store.
Your ECU is designed to turn the sensor light on so you will take it to the dealship.....but all you need to do is take off the kick panel and eset the sensor light. Yes this is the lil philips head screws that hold the panel on.
Turn you key on and then mash the button. I believe its on top of the box....or maybe on bottom....cant remember.
As for idle goes......well vacume has alot to do with that....check for leaks.

I dont think the idle problem is vaccuum related, once the car warms up it idles normally around 700-800, I'm wondering if perhaps a sensor is out of wack and over-compensating for cold condition or something. All the tubing in the car appears to be in good order.

My coup does the idle thing some times. If I shut it off and turn it back on it idles normal. Or I'll just drive it down the freeway and not notice it. I once thought it might be related to the oil level. Havent been able to attribute it to any thing else. Maybe barametric air pressure or humidity??? IDK but it's really not worth nitpicking a 19 year old car. They have their quirks.
As for thar sensor light. Psgr side kick panel, little button on the top of the tin box, push it. I did with the engine off. It clicked and the light was off the next time I drove it. BTW, it went on at 295,000.1 miles.
Those oil caps come off a lot easier when the engine is hot and the rubber is soft.

Yeah I thought about it later and it made sense, I didnt think the cap was made out of rubber, I thought it was plastic (gives you an idea about its texture ;p). Humidity and barametric pressure are none issues, im in virginia ... in the shenandoah valley. My oil was low when i finally cracked it open, I added a quart but I don't think it helped the idle. Ah well ...
Anyone else's Pulsar seem to dirty oil very quickly? I checked mine after 3,000 to see if it needed to be changed and the oil was very dark! I'm wondering if the last owner let it sit for too long, although he did have fresh oil in it when he put it away.
