New to this board, car...

Well... One of my friends is going to give me his 88' sentra.. I know very little about the car, because i only seen it once... I know its a 2 door, and not a hatchback.... He said it has like 110,000 miles and slight rust underneathe the car... But other then that he said it runs great... He was going to get rid of it anyways and is giving it to me for free, so im wondering just some basic stuff about the car... I seen the outside, although it does not have any visible rust... It did have a cracked right front light, and a few dents on the right side... But this car is only going to be used locally, and only sometimes.. because i already own a 96 galant.... My galant is a auto, and this car will be my first manual... Thats the only reason i want it, just to have fun in... So what can i do to the motor/exaust for a few hundred dollars, that will sup it a little... My uncle is a mechanic so i dont have to worry about installation, or getting anything fixed.. Only about the purchasing of the parts... Hopefully ill be getting the car when he comes back from vacation on the first...

Anyways thanks for any info you got...

Well they are great reliable cars, and have some of the nicest manual trannys out there, so it's a good car to learn on. It has the e16i engine and you can get TONNES of info on it in the e-series engine forum. Have fun. If you have anymore specific questions feel free to post them.

BTW once you know how to drive them well, they have FANTASTICALLY AMAZING handling.

Welcome to The Nissan Board, here you'll find many people (like myself, RiceBox and 89SENTRAXE)that are extremly educated about the E16i Engine, and its basicly bulletproof transmission, even tho they are prone to pop out of fifth gear. it is a rock solid car with amazing agility. Feel Free to email me if you have any questions.

Good lord.. prone to pop out of 5th? Is there a single "common problem" with the B12 Sentra that mine isn't suffering from? I swear, I can almost make a top 10 list of common problems for the B12, and my car has them all! Ahh well, I won't be bored, and I won't be wasting my money. ;> heh.

Oh hey, didn't mean to thread crap. Anyways, I see lots of rally spring kits for these Sentra's on Ebay, drops the car about an inch or two and stiffens it up. Toss in some KYB GR2 struts while your installing them and you'd have some impressive handling. I've also heard that the B13 Sentra strut bars will work on the B12. If your into winding roads like I am, those are some must have parts.

Top 10 common problems.

1) Transmission Mounting Bosses (fixed, and admittedly my fault)
2) Head Gasket
3) Piston Rings (burning oil)
4) Axles
5) 5th gear
6) Muffler
7) Sudden dramatic oil pressure loss (previous owner...)
8) Hopeless chokeless carburetor (only due to lack of computer)

And I guess I'm lucky on the last two.. My wheel bearings are fine (or I can't hear them over the raging exhaust system) and my headlights are aimed perfectly so I haven't messed with them.
Are window regulators a common problem? My drivers window is propped up with a 2x4... :>
