stereo only "crackles" when moter is on

My stereo is doing something funny. it sounds just fine when the moter is off but when i turn the engine on the sound is distorted and it sounds like a weak singnal off the raidio. It does this even when i'm using a CD. Is this a common problem? My car is a '88 sentra. stereo and speakers are only about a year old.

Check all your wires. Could be something grounding out to the chassis, or shorting with a power wire of some kind.

I'd also say to check ur wires. U could be gettin the grounding problem, or your rca's could be right on top of ur power and wires. Could be old wires, or a number of things. But separate the power and rca's and find a new grounding point first. If that don't help, then come back and reply.

Swaped out the dash from my new doner car today and finially found the problem. Ground cabel had wiggled itslelf loose, not off. It was in a bad place anyway. I got a good ground and the sound is back at where it should be. Good ol' econo system. Oh, the new dash looks great too. The doner car spent much of its life out of the sun so no cracks like the old one. Just learning as i go.
