Just curious to know what size speakers go in the factory cutouts for the previous gen sentras (I think 2001-2006?).
Today I took the door panel off my 2007 sentra, intending to put my infiniti kappa 6.5s and there 6x9s in there. That was a little surprising. Crutchfield has an adapter, but even their system seems to think that regular round speakers go in the doors.
Now I'm debating using the adapters on the trunkboard and getting seperates up front. Have to think about it...
Iwas just at two different places and they both listed the 07 Sentra as 6 1/2's in the doors....6 X 9's are quiute the surprise! Any special tools needed to get the door panels off?
thanks
I took pictures the last time I pulled the doors but I forgot one, so I never posted the how-to. My plan was to take the missing picture(s) when I went to install new speakers, but that hasn't happened for cash flow reasons...
But to answer your question, no, you don't need any custom tools. There's one screw behind the door handle, but you have to gently pry out the cover plate first. You'll see a small notch. You can stick a flat head screwdriver in there to pry it.
Also, you do the same pry thing with the inside door handle/cup. Pry off the cover and you'll see the screw. When that's off, you pull the arm rest off, if I remember right. And there's one below that.
Then you pry the main door panel off by gently prying along the edges. There's plastic retainers all along the edge.
So, I think you only need a flat and philips.
The place to be careful is when dealing with the electronics. You have to disconnect the wires that go to the power window/lock controls. Fortunately, it's super easy as it's all terminated in one white plastic unit. You just gently pry it out of the socket and it only fits one way so you don't have to worry about mixing up when you put it back together.
Oh and another thing - if you got 6.5s in the door, you will need an adapter. Crutchfield sells one or includes it if you buy speakers. Very likely, you will have to drill your own holes in the adapter too.
According to CF, the dimensions make it so very few aftermarket speakers of the larger sizes will fit. Lots of 5.5s fit with the adapter, but I think depth or tweeter protrusion is a problem with lots of 6.5s and 6x9s. I originally planned to put my infinity kappa 6.5s in the front, but CF said they wouldn't fit. I got the adapters and put them in the back. Stupid me, though. The adapters are plastic and you need to put something in there to prevent rattle. I'm going to try some closed-cell foam tape, which you can get at home depot, but I need to check to make sure it can take the heat and not melt on me.
Strangly, with the kappa 6.5s in the back and the angled tweaters, the highs are halfway decent. And the 6x9 stocks provide decent bass. A little muddy but not nearly as bad as friend's honda stock speakers. It's surprisingly decent overall, which is why I"m not eating top ramen to get components right away. Waiting for the cash to build back up.
Another nice thing is there's lot's of room under the front seats so I might go with a small powered sub under one and a 4-channel amp under the other. Fun little project...
FYI....The Kickers (6930 model) did fit with a little trimming of the speaker baffle. They sound awesome. Probably will throw some in the back deck as well down the road!
