Steering Wheel Audio Control

Does anybody know where the wiring from the steering wheel audio control goes?
Does it go straight to the radio or is there an interface in line somewhere?
I have had a look at the module on the steering wheel and it appears as though it just varies the resistance depending on which button is pressed.

I actually want to hook it up to a MFD sat nav (made by Blaupunkt and badged VW/SEAT/FORD), I am also trying to find out what protocol that uses.

I don't think it uses a Blaupunkt standard.
I'm guessing that the system is based on the I2C bus with the Clock and Data terminals on the back of the unit.

I think the only way I will find out for definate is by putting a scope on one in a VW or Ford.
