This is a hairy subject, and may not be suitable for this forum. I will say that media used to make dvds varies widely with compatibility of stand alone players. This is not limited to +R/-R issues, but also brand names and runs of media within that brand. I suggest spending some time at www.doom9.org to help you understand these issues better; I do not feel comfortable posting more here.

Not all dvd players play "back ups" or copied movies. Rule of thumb, the cheaper the dvd player the more formats its going to play. You'll have to find somebody on the net that has that same dvd player and see what format they are burning in if any to make copies correctly.

Its probably your choice in recordable media. This has been extensively covered in internet forums. Right now I believe taiyo-yuden makes the most compatible media, but it changes all the time.
