Manual Tx Question, 2000 GXE

I'm the new owner of a 2000 Maxima GXE with manual shifting. After driving around town, I find the ride to be a bit jerky when in first or second gear (ex., when driving around a parking lot). It feels sensitive when applying the gas in these low speed situations or when going down hill.

Please keep in mind, most of my past cars were automatics, so I'm getting used to a manual. I drove a manual Opal Corsa last year in Italy, but I don't remember this characteristic (perhaps I wasn't looking for it).

Is this just normal for a manual, or should I get an expert to check it out?
