Handling on 03 Maxima

I have a 2003 Maxima SE with 100k miles. So far its been a pretty good vehicle (save the fuel pump and abs sensor).

It seems like the steering is not as tight as it used to be and get some slop when hitting bumps. Any suggestions on what is required or upgrades to tighten up the handling?

Thanks

Dave

Replace the struts would probably be a good first start, since those are probably worn. Replacing the front end bushings-- control arms, sway bar end links, sway bar frame, etc. would be a bit more work...

Thanks

OK, thanks Brian

Appreciate the feedback. It seems like there have been a number of posts on the site around the same topic.

Stock struts ok? or should I go with performance struts?

If you're happy with the stock ride then go with stock struts or equivalent-- KYB GR-2's would be the most common quality aftermarket equivalent.

If you want something stiffer, KYB AGX's or Tokico Illuminas would be the highest-performance adjustable equivalents, although those are normally considered a bit overkill unless you specifically want a serious street performance upgrade.

I'd upgrade some of the bushings too, especially the front sway bar bushings, with polyurethane bushings from Energy Suspension.

Like Brian said, struts would be a good idea, and if you're going aftermarket, might as well consider some springs like Eibach or H&R too.

Also look into things like a lower tie bar (LTB), front strut tower brace (FSTB) and rear anti-sway bar (RSB).
