To anyone who has upgraded the exhaust

Can you guys tell me how much am I looking at spending for exh. modifications? Y-pipe, catback - I prefer the good deal over big name. I also believe in "you get what you paid for", but there must be some quality no-name items out there that are The bang for the buck. Please tell me how much you guys have paid for your upgrades.
Thanks

Depends on your wallet and needs.

500-1000 for y-pipe and catback, it really depends

You can go cheaper with a Y pipe and rear secion only.

www.cattman.com

They make good solid products.

If it were me.

Budget Y-pipe $168ish
Custommaxima.com test pipe with resonator $70ish I think
Budget B-pipe with resonator $125ish
Muffler of your choice. I'd do a flowmaster! 50ish

Total: $413

Do you think performance gains with the y-pipe alone are really noticable? Would it work fine with a stock muffler or should I put on an aftermarket.
Do you guys know anyone with a flowmaster on their max? Can it be done, how loud is it?

what's is a test pipe? Does it replace the cat?
By the way, what is the official layout of maxima's exhaust? Is it:
Headers to Y-pipe to catalitic coverter to b-pipe to muffler????
Correct me if I am wrong, please.

flowmasters i've never personally seen or heard but i think it has been done. i wouldn't know how loud.

a y-pipe alone will add a considerable amount of HP even without doing any other exhaust work. check out www.motorvate.ca for details.

a test pipe is almost a high flow cat, but not exactly. it replaces your cat. it's basically a straight pipe. it is for racing only and is not street legal though a lot of people run with them anyway.

and you are correct about the maxima exhaust layout...

you don't ever need to replace the headers, it's pointless. just an FYI.

I found some beautiful looking high flow cats on e-bay, but they don't say what they are made of. I hope it is stainless steel. They were around $40 or less.

One thing you may want to wait on is for cattman's header options... they're comparable to the longtube headers made for the modern domestics... in essence, it will replace the headers and y pipe, combining the two into a single performance part... There may definately be gains from this setup... we'll see.

For little gains over a Y-pipe, I doubt the Cattman "headers" are going to be "economically viable" at this time.

Right...I'm not getting them. I'd rather have a y-pipe.

y-pipe

I have a NOX performance muffler and a budget exhaust y-pipe on my 98 maxima 5-spd. I'd have to say that the y-pipe is an excellent boost of power for the money, but don't forget that the budget y-pipe gets rid of a couple of catalytic converters and makes your maxima not quite street legal. It will also make it a bit louder. I have a resonator and it is much louder than before.
