I have a 1995 Maxima GXE with 219,000 miles with an engine rattle noise on startup that seems to be getting worse. Funny thing is, I am starting to hear that on my 1996 200sx SE-R also. Especially when its colder outside. The rattle goes away in 2 or 3 seconds. I'm worried that the oil isnt getting up there and may cause valve damage? My local Nissan repair place (not a dealer but Nissan Certified) told me that oil buildup around the valves over time will prevent the oil from getting up there very quickly on startup and added some $10 additive about a year or so ago but the rattle seems to have gotten worse on both cars. I've rwad about the timing belt tensioner making noise but I would like to get some other opinions on what causes this and what in-expensive fixes there may be for it. The Maxima has been the BEST car I have ever owned and I have had about 8 Nissans over the last 15 years or so. Any help or advice would be appreciated!!
