Need Help, Oil measurement wrong.

I have a 97 maxima, and im having some trouble with the oil measurement, the car has been unused for a while, but it still starts up. when i pull the oil stick out with the car off, it measures lower than what it has, and when i try to measure it with the car on and warm, the oil measures too high, also there is some oil leak under the car and it looks like its coming from the oil pan, maybe it has a messed up gasket, im not sure if this may be causing the oil to measure wrong, can anyone tell me what im dealing with here, thx.

Never measure with the car on/running...the oil is cycling through the engine so you will never get an accurate measurement.

How bad is the oil leak?...is it on the ground or do you visually see it on the pan itself?

Remove dipstick.

Wipe dipstick.

Reinsert dipstick fully, then immediately withdraw and examine oil level on dipstick: this is the best way to get an accurate measure on the VQ30DE.

part of the oil is on the ground, but if you look under the car there is no oil dripping. When i check the oil with the car off the oil measures really low and when i turn the car on, the oil measures too high, sort of like if it was goin crazy in there.

i do just like you mentioned, but even so the oil measures completely wrong, on one side its all over the dipstick from the low end to a little higher then the max level, and on the other side it measures low.

Is the engine cold? If it's warm, you're never going to get an accurate reading.

Also you should be reading just from the low point on the marked side.

the oil is just all over the stick, i would say like from half way down. could that have something to do with the oil pan gasket not holding the oil inside?

Probaby not, since the gasket is very low...

I would get the oil leak fixed and see what the deal is.

I have found that it is hard to get a good read on the dipstick immediately after engine shut-down. Oil was just splashed up onto the dipstick tube and it will read all over the place. If you wait a couple minutes after shut-down on a warm engine, you will get good readings; and sometimes it take a couple of dips. Make sure you are parked on level ground too.
