I have been getting terrible gas mileage in my 96 maxima...16-17 city, and 21-24 hwy. And for quite a while it has been taking a while to start it, and has gotten progressively worse. So, I changed the air filter, it definitely needed it, but didn't really effect the gas mileage.
Today I changed the fuel filter and while doing that, noticed that the gas that was draining out of the filter as I took it off was dark yellow and had very tiny and very fine metal shavings in it

Sooo...I am thinking this probably had something to do with the gas mileage, and possibly even the delay while starting. Any ideas?
Now...the filings came from the flow-in side (bottom). So I am assuming they came from the gas tank. which probably means there is still plenty of stuff actually in the tank.....right? Is there a way to drain the tank? or flush it? Or clean it at all? Or is this even the source of the dirt/bad gas mileage/bad starts????
Any help, input, advice is appreciated, thanks!
P.S. before my last fill up I let it get pretty low (Almost, but not quite to to the empty line 1/16 of a tank left). I was driving on the freeway in Phoenix, AZ and the car started spurting like it was on empty or something...I immediately exited, but the nearest gas station was still 3 miles away...and after exiting, it didn't spurt anymore. After filling up it didn't spurt either. Could this be from maybe getting to the bottom of the tank, and more metal/grime comes out, hindering flow????
What a mess!!!
