If you have a manual it describes how to set your distributor in properly. On my nx2000 I had to get the #1 piston at TDC top dead center. Pull the #1 plug. Crank the car with the cap off. Have somebody or yourself at the #1 whole and feel for a gush of air coming out while cranking. Once you feel that gush stop cranking immediately. This means the #1 piston is all the way up and and from this point you install your distributor.

I had the same exact thing happen to my car and damn it was a pain to trouble shoot with all the things that can be wrong with the distributor. Make sure that there are absolutely no skuff marks on your distributor or the area where it goes into. These can affect rotation.
I looked in the FSM, and couldn't find anything about installing the distributor, but I took your advice about putting the #1 piston at TDC, and I got it running. I have it "timed" by ear as of right now, as I gotta go borrow a timing gun from my friend, which I'll do later today. THANKS!
