a good idea to follow is that if your going into an area where you might need 4 wheel drive ( only if your truck has manual hubs), you should lock the hubs first, you can still drive in 2 wheel drive and than when you need 4 wheel drive you just put it into 4 high. It's better to lock the hubs before hand than having to try to do it when the hubs are under water or mud, etc.
