Frankly, I thought the Mini and 510 were down further than they deserved to be. In terms of significance, they started the whole sport compact thing as the Mini was the first ordinary tansportation subcompact to have a heavy aftermarket following (VW Bug wasn't popular until a few years later) and the Datsun 510 was the first Japanese subcompact to have a motorsport following. They also failed to mention the first turbocharged subcompact, the 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder.
When you think about it , the American auto industry pioneered many of the firsts we take for granted today. Chrysler had ABS optional in 1972, GM pioneered the turbo, Chrysler EFI, the Cord 810 was the first FWD car (built by the Auburn company of Auburn Indiana) and GM had optional Airbags as early as the mid 70's.
