If the master cylinder is failing then typically the pedal feel will get really soft. I had a master cylinder go out on a 71 impala once (3400 pound 4 door boat)...that was not a pretty sight. Scared the hell out of the passenger when I told him I was resting the brake pedal against the firewall lol.
