Well, about the pumping...that's normal, to a certain degree. Any car with power assisted brakes will allow you to increase the pressure in the break lines by pumping the the pedal. I can do the same thing in my '93 with really old breaks. Pumping quickly and lightly will make the pedal very tough to press. If it's too difficult to press during normal driving (without pumping), though, it could be too much assist - hope that helps.
